Ted Kennedy, “liberal lion of the Senate,” dies at 77

Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) succumbed to brain cancer today, after battling the ailment for years.

Kennedy was the consummate politician, with his Ivy League education, immaculate political pedigree, and scandal-swathed notoriety. At the conclusion of his life, Kennedy was held in high regard as a power player in the Senate, and enjoyed immense popularity for his fight against brain cancer.

Kennedy attended Harvard University, where he was expelled for cheating on a test, though later reinstated. By the time he was 30, this youngest of nine Kennedy children had secured a seat in the Massachusetts senate. However, his luck took a turn for the worse as a string of unfortunate events unfolded soon thereafter.

Follwoing the assassination of John F. Kennedy and, later, Robert Kennedy, Ted drunkenly drove his car off a bridge at Chappaquiddick, drowning a female passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy himself swam for safety, but left the young woman to die in the submerged vehicle, and waited until the next day to report the incident. In a swift publicity offensive, he managed to salvage his career enough to stay in power through the rest of his life. Only in politics can you murder someone and still manage to be America’s darling.

Kennedy’s image was further tarnished, as he became known as a flagrant womanizer, perhaps because he was caught in the act in a public Washington restaurant and rumored to be skirt chasing around the Capitol with a fellow senator. His nephew William Smith was also charged with raping a woman after an evening out with Ted, further tainting Kennedy’s reputation.

Major political issues for Ted were immigration, voter rights, and gun control, and during George W. Bush’s administration, he emerged as the leading opponent against the invasion of Iraq.

Interestingly, Kennedy’s most recent political battle has been the crusade against the current health care system. I wonder if he realized that finding a cure for a septuagenarian’s diagnosis with cancer is probably not a top priority in non-privatized medicine, as it is definitely not cost-effective to pour money into rescuing an elderly person from a terminal illness. But hey, you can’t put a cost on life, unless its of any American not born into political royalty. That’s not elitist at all.

On the plus side, had he been a lowly, average-American, non-Kennedy, his plan for healthcare “overhaul” would have offered him the country’s best experts on dying an economical death “end of life counseling.”

Miss Venezuela: women and men treated equally

In a bid for the Miss Universe title, which Venezuela-born Stefania Fernandez eventually clenched, the brunette beauty said, “women have overcome many obstacles and have reached the same level as men.”

Is anyone else surprised that this answer won Ms. Fernandez the crown? I’m wondering if Germaine Greer attempted to reach through the television and asphyxiate this statuesque beauty, while somewhere in the dressing rooms, a scantily clad Heidi Montag, who served as entertainment during the show, probably began to take credit by shamelessly promoting her recent Playboy spread.

Miss Venezuela’s answer is commendable; to answer candidly with an opinion that may not align itself with the popular social view is quite haphazard (see: Prejean, Carrie and homophobic implosion). Props to Miss Universe judges, some F-list ex-reality show celebuwannabes, for awarding such a forward-thinking answer.

It seems a little backward that Miss Venezuela’s answer came on the heels of her bathing suit competition, which has beat out the defunct “talent” competition to keep its position in the pageant. As the crown-winning answer stated, women have overcome obstacles to be held in the same esteem as men. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a dazzling smile and dress slit up to the get up, either.

Peplums add femininity, formality to any ensemble

Earlier, I wrote about the dissolution of femininity in these financially trying times, when many women are returning to the workforce to supplement a dwindling household income. It seems the structured shoulder and warrioresque footwear, however, have met their match from certain designers not yet ready to see all that’s feminine and fair lose out to powerful and intimidation-causing clothing.

In a trend that lost much popularity during the no curves, stick-thin craze of the last few decades, the peplum, which features twee little frills right around the hip and waist (thus adding volume to those areas) has enjoyed a resurgence.  Though not terribly flattering, the peplum, is the utmost feminine garment, with its soft ruffles and emphasis on womanly curves.

Peplums have been spotted on the red carpet as well as the runway, appealing to everyone from the awesomely theatrical Alexander McQueen to the funky-chic Prada. This trend is perfect for all seasons, and can be attached to coats, dresses, blouses, and any other waist-concealing garment. Peplums can even be found as detachable accessories to be added to any outfit for instant style and formality.

Interestingly, the peplum originates from the Greek peplos, which is the Greek word for “tunic.” For a cultural perspective, see my earlier “Fashion Apocalypse” piece detailing the theory about classical civilizations that met their demise through excessive power, consumption, and hedonism. For now, though, we can just enjoy the refined frivolity of this sweet little adornment.

Obama: do it for the kids

In a very understandable move early this week, President Obama asked the media to keep his two daughters, Sasha and Malia, out of the news.

This follows tradition with most presidents in the close past, as Bill Clinton got riled up when an SNL skit made fun of Chelsea and George W. Bush did his best to keep his twin daughters out of the public eye despite their notorious hard-partying reputations.

What makes Obama’s situation a little different is that his plea comes in response to media attention during his family vacation. The White House issued, “The first family would very much appreciate if you respect the privacy of the girls while they’re out here on vacation.’’ Perhaps angered by the negative reactions about Michelle’s less-than-formal shorts (which we didn’t find so offensive), the president made this appeal for his daughters’ privacy in context of leaving his family alone to relax in Martha’s Vineyard.

It’ll be interesting to see how the media handle this request. Obama has been the press’ darling since the campaign started, but plummeting approval numbers and rumors of administration rudeness may be taking their toll onotherwise obsequious journalists.

As a side note, it will also be quite telling to watch how this situation contrasts to Sarah Palin’s plight, as her brood was subjected to media criticism despite being underage (and one, mentally disabled) and largely unrelated to any of Palin’s political views. I don’t think we will be shocked when the pandering media leave Sasha and Malia alone to their vacation endeavors. Somewhere, David Letterman is thinking up misogynistic jokes to make himself relevant again.

“Stimulus” package lives up to its name

With the economy in the toilet and the current administration throwing parties over a drop in unemployment of one-tenth of a percent (after taking a several point hike that was not as publicly paraded), it’s a good thing the stimulus package is arousing something.

The Washington Post revealed that the next fiscal year will see researchers benefitting from the stimulus package to look into sexual studies that are inexplicably going to boost our economy.

The National Institutes of Health awarded $221,000 to look into “barriers to correct condom use” at Indiana University. Is there some reason why it takes six figures to explain how to wrap it up? Other outrageous grants went to Syracuse University, which received $219,000 to study the hookup culture among students. As an ’09 graduate from Vanderbilt University, I can assure you that four years’ worth of private school tuition to study the hit-it-and-quit-it phenomenon is money poorly spent. Beers are 2-for-1 at Flying Saucer on Mondays, and if you wink at the right people, this experiment could have been carried off expense-free.

UChicago will receive $123,000 to study drugs as a sex enhancer for “high-risk community sex networks.” The University of Maryland, on the other hand, will win a paltry $28,000 to study meth and its ability to create an “insatiable need” for sex among abusers. I just hope they expensed enough money to secure the borders between The Free State and an angry ice-seeking Amy Winehouse. I can already see her busting out of rehab Bellatrix Lestrange out-of-Azkaban style. Only with more herpes and less clothing.

Sneak peak at Worth Wear trunk show

gview

I joined Susan Hammann Bernstein last night for an exclusive look at the W fall and winter collection. Pieces ranged from basic wardrobe staples in classic designs to luxe fashion-forward items to punctuate any closet.

Worth Wear specializes in giving women the opportunity for personal business-based growth by offering collections of clothing that can be sold in a private residence. The company, which is just over 15 years old, has international private resellers.

Things to look for in the upcoming season from W include bright jewel tones in charmeusse, butter soft winter coats, and Victorian perfectly-fussy-and-proper blouses with ruffles, ribbons, and dramatic necklines.

Haircolor to dye for

In 2002, according to Garnier Nutrisse, more blonde and peroxide based shades of hair dye were sold than darker colors like black, brown, or even ginger. In the last two years, however, that trend has been reversed. Experts cite the faltering economy as a factor: maintaining a blonde mop is quite expensive, as most post-adolescent women have naturally brown hair.

Brunettes seem to be dominating all over Hollywood, as well. Move over, 90s all-American blonde child stars like Kate Bosworth, Kirsten Dunst, and Tara Reid. Enter raven-haired beauties like Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, and Olivia Wilde.

Urban Dictionary defines “brunette” in this manner:

1. brunette

1. a person with dark colored hair that is generally really cool and smart and knows a hell of alot more then blondes

all the hot girls that u see are generally brunettes and if they aren’t then they died their hair and were originally brunettes.

I can’t tell if this was written by a brunette or not, as “alot” hasn’t been one word since we left first grade and “died” is a macabre misspelling of hair color alteration. Perhaps written by a blonde who went brunette?

In a perhaps not so surprising report from “The Telegraph” earlier this year, it was reported that brunettes make over twice as much money as their blonde counterparts who perform the same tasks. They are also more respected and apparently have stronger long-term relationships.

It’s a bit dramatic to call this a fall from innocence, but people with darker hair are perceived to be more mature because light hair is associated with younger women. In the face of the recession, perhaps it’s a better idea to keep a natural, darker shade: less upkeep and a bigger salary to boot.

On the other hand, recently blonded Kim Kardashian, who traded in her signature curtain of lush black hair for a generic honey-hued shade, is up 157% in popularity this week on IMDb.com. Go figure.

Short story: Michelle Obama has knee caps!

In a trip to the Grand Canyon, Mrs. Obama rocked a pair of chino shorts that have people talking. Apparently we’re more concerned about patellas than we are about any of the other national crises we are facing.

Perhaps this move was so surprising because no other first lady has ever worn shorts in such a public outing. In her continual crusade against formalism, Michelle has again lowered the standard for attire worn by America’s first family.

This is not necessarily a negative thing. While previous first lady Laura Bush was BFFs with Oscar de la Renta, Mrs. O relies on mass-produced discount stores like the Gap and J. Crew to supplement her closet. I suppose this has a certain populist appeal.

Although multiple media outlets have named Michelle as an iconic dresser, it’s hard to see why such press machines have any reason to exalt some her outlandish fashion statements. See:

michelle obamaobamamichelle_obama_fur_free

From left: Michelle borrows Malia’s dress and keeps it demure with mom jeans, playing dress up with clothing found at the country club yard sale, and masquerading as split pea soup.

She seems to be stuck in the land of color confusion and pattern perplexity, bordered by generally contrived and age-inappropriate. Can we just be grateful she wasn’t wearing jorts?
