Intern Hilary: It’s Birthloween!

In my opinion, Halloween is the best holiday of the year.  October 31st is not only one day of the year where debauchery of all sorts is permitted, but it is also my birthday.  And this year, it’s my 21st.  Usually, birthday girls wear the outfit that they would not be allowed to get away with on any other day of the year, often because it is so blatantly attention-grabbing and screams, almost rudely, “look at me!  It’s my birthday!”  Now apply that theory to my Halloween birthday.  The question for me isn’t can I top last year’s outfit?, but rather, can my costume this year be even better than last year?

I’ve had some borderline-epic costumes over the years.  For the first three years of my existence, I was a pumpkin.  In pre-kindergarten, I was a white cat, and in kindergarten, a cheerleader.  First grade I dressed as a giant silver foil Hershey’s Kiss, and third grade I was Robin Hood. By the time middle school rolled around, I think I believed myself to be “over” dressing up.  But then high school arrived and I got back into the swing of things, dressing as “Camo Girl,” a character of my own invention.

And then came college.  Freshman year I was a Beer Girl, fondly known as “German Beer Maiden Fraulein Girl.”  As a sophomore, I was a Trojan warrior complete with red-plumed helmet and dagger.  This year, I will be the yellow “Fanta” girl on Friday night, complete with the perfect accessories: three friends to dress up as the other Fantas.  On Saturday the 31st, my 21st, I will return to the basics and be a cheerleader, complete with my very own football player.  Although this costume is a tad different than the one I sported in Kindergarten, it will no doubt stir fond memories as I celebrate reaching the legal drinking age (relatively) unscathed.

So for this one night of the year, have fun and go crazy, but remember the wise words of my older brother: “safety is key.” There’s nothing like jail time to ruin a birthday!

qwp’s Halloween Editor’s note: happy birthday, BOO!

Obama’s “impact” on race relations not real

According to a recent poll done by Gallup, the number of African-Americans who believe Obama has had a positive impact on race relations has dropped by eight percent since last summer, to 42%. With whites, which inexplicably is a category despite African-Americans getting a much more PC group name, optimism has dropped from 60% to 59%.

“In short, despite all that has happened in the intervening decades, there is scarcely more hope now than there was those many years ago that the nation’s race-relations situation will be solved,” Gallup said.

The survey also turned out the result that 82% of whites believe that blacks have as good a chance as whites in their community to succeed, which was echoed by only 49% of blacks who felt that way.

Gallup also said:

“Despite the election of the first black president in U.S. history, Americans’ optimism about a solution to the race problem in the U.S. and their views about the prevalence of racism against blacks are not substantially more positive now than they have been in previous years. .. blacks remain significantly more negative than whites about their status in society and about the potential for an eventual solution to the race problem.”

Obama’s “impact” couldn’t be because he acted stupidly, could it?

Lou Dobbs’ house a gunshot victim

A gunshot was aimed at the home of Lou Dobbs, a CNN correspondent, following a number of threatening phone calls to him and his family, Dobbs reported to listeners on his nationally syndicated radio show.

The neocon, who vehemently opposes amnesty and supports full border protection, said, “They’ve created an atmosphere and they’ve been unrelenting in their propaganda,” referring to pro-immigration groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the National Council of La Raza and America’s Voice. “Three weeks ago this morning, a shot was fired at my house where I live. My wife was standing out and that followed weeks and weeks of threatening phone calls.”

William Gheen, president of AILAC, told FoxNews, ““That shot, that attack on the Dobbs family is an attack on every American that values First Amendment rights.

Dobbs commented that he has been vilified by “the national liberal media,” and living with threats and gunshots has “become a way of life.”

Synthetic babies

In a government-funded project, scientists have finally been successful in creating synthetic sperm and eggs, possibly deeming women and men obsolete from carrying on the human race.

The success has been met with mixed reactions: some are excited about the advance because it offers infertile women the opportunity to have children with their genetic material, but opponents are concerned about messing with the natural processes of life. The research project also includes the search for a “miracle pill” to stave off menopause, allowing women to give birth at older ages.

Also up on the list for the research project is finding a way for gay couples to create offspring based on two of same-sexed parents’ genetic material.

Schwarzenegger: Stealth F-bomber

Here’s an awesomely crafted letter the governor of California sent to a Democratic lawmaker who had berated Schwarzenneger in a recent event held in San Francisco. It’s respectfully worded, that is, until you check out the cool acrostitc poem the sly fox hid down the left hand margin.  Aahnahld’s rep called the message “a coincidence.”

Church of Scientology convicted of fraud

As if Tom Cruise didn’t have it bad enough as it is. A Parisian court has just convicted the “Church” of Scientology of fraud, and has fined it more than 600,000 euro, or about $900,000.  The court did not, however, ban Scientology, as was the wish of prosecutors.

French Scientologists immediately said they would appeal the verdict.

The Church of Scientology was convicted of organized fraud, after investigators found the organization pressured its members into paying large amounts of money as part of a dubious investment scheme, and utilized “commercial harassment” against dissidents.

Meghan McCain hits the quarter-century mark

Meghan McCain, who remembered to cover her chesticles this time, turned 25 over the weekend, and celebrated in Las Vegas. Following her racy twitpic fiasco, the blogetter tweeted, “I’m sorry twitterfam, there will be no twitpics. it’s not you, its them.”

The buxom blonde did twitter about how much she loves Vegas, though, basically serving as an unpaid promoter while tweeting, “I love this city so much! it never disappoints!! Everyone should come for a vacation!!”

McCain celebrated her bday at Rain nightclub Friday night at the Palms hotel.

Obama golfs as much as Bush–in a fraction of the time!

President Obama has been in office for about as long as it takes to gestate a baby, but already he has gone golfing as much as G-Dubbs did in nearly three years. The increasingly disliked prez has golfed 24 times as of yesterday.

Another tee time tidbit? Obama played golf with a woman, the chief domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes, for the first time since he was inaugurated.

It’s fine, we don’t have serious domestic and international problems with the economy (and security, and immigration, and terrorism, and…) right now.
