Shocker. The WSJ writes:
“The Obama administration has asked a federal appeals court to uphold a race-conscious admissions system at the University of Texas at Austin, aiming to stymie a lawsuit that conservatives hope will spur the Supreme Court to limit affirmative action at public colleges.”
On the plus side, at least you can’t blame the Obama Administration for being hypocritical in this aspect. We wouldn’t want minorities to earn admission based on any actual merit; that wouldn’t have worked out well for the White House. Honorable!
The National Rehabilitation Hospital, which celebrates fundraising through unique events like polo games and 5Ks, held its first-ever Las Vegas and casino night-themed party last week. Held on a Thursday evening, this glitzy affair, held at the National Museum for Women in the Arts Building, was the perfect kick-off to the weekend. Guests were treated to delicious nibbles and cocktails, while Blackjack dealers and Texas Holdem pros like Mary Jones kept them entertained with their Vegas-perfected card skills.
Casino-themed decor, like blinking bulbs and “Welcome to Vegas” table trinkets dotted the historic space. Sequins, rhinestones, and beads covered the ladies, while men wore everything from black-tie to creative dice-spangled ties to show off their Craps abilities. It was an exciting evening for the noble causes of the National Rehabilitation Hospital, which raised money for its own programs dealing with injuries like brain and spinal cord damage, in addition to stroke.

Washington, D.C., (March 26, 2010) – Luke’s Wings announced its overwhelming success for the month of March thanks to our ever faithful supporters.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of our supporters, Luke’s Wings had one of its most successful months in its three year history. One of the groups that sprung to action was George Mason Law, who hosted a Casino Night benefitting Luke’s Wings on March 4, 2010. Professors volunteered to be dealers and several local businesses donated prizes. With over 100 people in attendance, they were able to raise over $1200.
One of our hero’s that directly benefited from the efforts of our supporters is Mark A., a soldier who had been shot in the head during a combat mission in Afghanistan in July of 2009. Undergoing several brain surgeries, Mark began to gain consciousness and was transferred to the emerging conscious program at the VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Mark’s father reached out to Luke’s Wings in September 2009, requesting that Mark’s 12 year old son, Cody be flown to his father’s bedside to be there when he woke up. Luke’s Wings jumped to action and provided flights for Cody along with his mother, and brother to ensure they were by his bedside.
Cody patiently sat by Mark’s bedside for 3 days over Labor Day weekend hoping his father would wake up from the comma. This story touched the entire Luke’s Wings family as well as our supporters and re-instilled not just our commitment to Luke’s Wings, but our confidence in the human spirit. On March 1, 2010 Luke’s Wings received another request from Mark’s father to have him and his wife flown to Walter Reed as Mark would be undergoing a critical cranioplasty surgery during the week of March 15. With no means of travel to Walter Reed, they relied on Luke’s Wings and our supporters to assist them in this endeavor. And we did.
On March 18, 2010 “Shenanigans at Public Bar”, the biggest St. Patrick’s Day event in Washington, D.C., benefiting Luke’s Wings, took place. The generous contributions from over 300 supporters who attended this event totaled $4,942. All attendees who read Mark’s touching story agreed that it was their civic duty to chip in and ensure the plane tickets for Mark’s parents were purchased. With this money raised, Luke’s Wings was able to finance their travel and any travel they will need in the future to visit Mark.
As you know, Luke’s Wings exists with the simple mission to fly family members to the bedsides of injured service officers. Luke’s Wings needs your help more than ever before. We now receive approximately 10 requests per week from families just like this one. Please help us.

“I do [support marriage equality], got that George Washington University Republicans?” So kicked off Meghan McCain’s fiery speech about her agenda as a political figure to the DC school. This comment was made following the GWU College Republicans’ decision to withdraw support of the blonde bombshell after she publicly supported gay marriage.
McCain didn’t stop there, though, and went after Keith Olbermann and Rush Limbaugh, saying their commentary turns people off to the discussion of politics.

Two female suicide bombers killed 37 people and injured 65 on a mass transit metro in Moscow today. No group has taken responsibility for the actions, but officials are suspicious of Muslim militants from the North Caucusus, where a growing insurgence from Chechnya is butting heads with the Kremlin. Posted on an unofficial Islamist militant site was this damning comment, “‘Blood will no longer be limited to our (Caucasus) cities and towns. The war is coming to their cities.”
The bombings took place at Park Kultury and Lubyanka.

Recognized as one of the area’s most fun charitable events, the 2010 Capital Area Food Bank’s 7th Annual Blue Jeans Ball at the Marriott Wardman Park is all about comfort and a good cause.
A chance to sample some of the area’s finest cuisine, enjoy live entertainment, and bid on live and silent auction items.
The Blue Jeans Ball is a one-of-a-kind, community-wide charitable event that encourages residents in the DC area to “come as you are,” learn more about the high prevalence of hunger among our neighbors throughout the metro region, and become part of the solution.
This year we added a new and exciting element to the Blue Jeans Ball. Pastry chefs from around the metro area will be creating “food” themed cakes as the featured desserts for the evening. Renowned chefs such as Michel Richard of Citronelle and Central, will participate in the creation of specialty cakes for the evening.
