To kick off the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Washingtonians gathered at the Pink Tie Party last Thursday at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. The stylish party is held every year on the first day of spring, which also coincides with the start of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Guests began the evening strutting the pink carpet, and the majority of attendees were dressed in pink cocktail attire to celebrate the city’s best known flower. In addition to a luxurious open bar and multiple tasting stations with both sweet and savory treats, supporters of the National Cherry Blossom Festival could try their hand at the multiple “games of chance” lining the huge party space. These games included a “bud burst,” where people burst pink and white balloons with a dart, a “Petal Pitch,” where one can bounce a ball and try to land it in a glass, mini golf, a ring toss, event the Penny Pitch bar where patrons bounced a penny into a glass behind the bar to win specialty cocktail glasses.

A diverse and upscale array of silent auction items benefitted the cause, and included items like airfare on Turkish Airlines (who also sponsored the unique Turkish coffee bar), a stay at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, and many other dining, concert, sporting, and theater experiences.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is the nation’s greatest springtime celebration. The 2014 Festival, March 20 – April 13, includes three spectacular weeks and four weekends of events featuring diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit.  The 2014 Festival commemorates the 102nd anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan.

Proceeds benefit the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the beauty of nature and international friendship through year-round programs, events, and educational initiatives that enhance our environment, showcase arts and culture, and build community spirit.
